When a stroke occurs, as many as two million brain cells
can die every minute until blood flow inside the brain is restored. The more
cells that are lost, the greater the odds that this “brain attack” will result
in permanent disability or death.
That fact underscores the need to know the warning signs
of a stroke and call 9-1-1 immediately if you see or experience them. That allows emergency medical professionals
to begin supportive and interventional measures well before the ambulance
reaches the hospital. Moreover, most emergency response teams are in
communication with the hospital’s emergency department while enroute, so
essential medical staff can be waiting.
